We report the discovery of a Type Ia SN at z=0.04 on December 6.058
(when the variable was at magnitude R = 17.2), as part of the La Silla-QUEST
(LSQ) transient survey conducted with Yale University's 160-megapixel QUEST
camera on the 1.0-m Schmidt Telescope of the European Southern Observatory
at La Silla, Chile (Rabinowitz et al. 2011, Ap.J. 732, 512). The source's
position is RA = 4h20m44s.27, Dec = -8o35'55".46 (equinox 2000.0). A
faint source is reported at this position in the Guide Star Catalog V2.3.2
(with F = 20.96). Followup LSQ observations taken during December 7-17
reveal a gradual brightness increase by > 0.7 mag. A spectrum (range 0.4-1.0 um)
taken on December 16 with IMACS on the Magellan-Baade 6.5-m telescope at
the Carnegie Institution's Las Campanas Observatory identified the source as
a Type Ia SN near peak. Additional follow up observations have been
initiated with the Swope Telescope and RetroCam since December 15.
