PESSTO spectroscopic classification of optical transients

PESSTO, the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey for Transient Objects (see Valenti et al., ATel #4037; http://www.pessto.org ), reports the following supernova classifications. Targets were supplied by the La Silla-Quest survey (see Hadjiyska et al., ATel #3812) and the TOCP page. All observations were performed on the ESO New Technology Telescope at La Silla on 2014 February 6 UT, using EFOSC2 and Grism 13 (3985-9315A, 18A resolution). Classifications were done with SNID (Blondin & Tonry, 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) and GELATO (Harutyunyan et al., 2008, A&A, 488, 383). (1) Narrow Balmer lines with broader base and P-Cygni absorption near 4500 km/s. Host galaxy redshift of ESO 264- G 049 from NED.
(2) Spectrum dominated by galaxy light with several strong narrow emission lines at z=0.075. The underlying continuum is not inconsistent with the spectrum of a young Type II supernova, although the signal-to-noise does not allow a definitive classification.
