We report the discovery and the classification of DLT16w/AT 2016fjp.
The object was discovered on 2016 August 26.4 UT at R~19.50 mag, during the ongoing D<40 Mpc (DLT40) one day cadence supernova search, using data from the PROMPT 5 0.41m telescope located at CTIO. We do not detect the transient (R>19.75 mag) on 2016 August 22.4 UT or in prior imaging of the field. All images were taken in a 'Clear' filter which was calibrated to an approximate R-band magnitude using the USNO-B1 catalog.
We obtained a spectrum of DLT16w/AT 2016fjp on 2016 September 4.6 UT with the robotic FLOYDS instrument mounted on the LCOGT 2-meter telescope in Siding Spring, Australia. Using SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024), we find a good fit to the normal Type Ia SN 2005cf at maximum light at the redshift of the proposed host galaxy (z=0.076; Katgert et al. 1998, A&AS, 129, 399, via NED). The spectrum is available on the Transient Name Server.
