We report the discovery of a Type Ia SN on May 23.99 UT (at a
discovery magnitude of R = 16.4), as part of the La Silla-QUEST (LSQ)
transient survey. Photometry is calibrated to the USNO-B1.0 catalog.
The source's position is RA = 14:47:48.48, DEC = +01:03:06.10 (J2000).
A spectrum was taken with the FLOYDS spectrograph on May 30 UT
showing that LSQ12cpf is a Type Ia SN near maximum light. An SDSS
spectrum of the host galaxy indicates a redshift of z=0.029. FLOYDS
is a new low dispersion spectrograph -- with single exposure
wavelength coverage of 330-1000 nm -- being commissioned on the
Faulkes Telescope South at Siding Springs Observatory.
