We obtained a spectrum of nova candidate M31N 2016-05b (PNV J00424288+4115274; ATel #9098) with the SPRAT spectrograph (Piascik et al. 2014) on the 2m Liverpool Telescope (Steele et al. 2004) on 2016 June 13.16 UT.

The spectrum shows strong, FWHM 2200±100 km/s, Balmer emission. It also shows Fe II (multiplets 37, 42, 48, 49, 55, 74) and possibly Mg I] (4571 Å) emission lines. As such we conclude that M31N 2016-05b is an eruption of a classical nova in M31 and belongs to the Fe II taxonomic class.
