We conducted a spectroscopic observation of transient Gaia16aay
(AT2016xb, PS16zf) at 2016-02-05T01:39:36.563 UT. This transient was
found by the Gaia Photometric Science Alerts and Pan-STARRS surveys on
2016-01-25.
A spectrum was obtain in the visible, 400-800nm, with resolution R~350,
using the SPRAT spectrograph on the Liverpool Telescope located at Roque
de los Muchachos.

Classification using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024)
indicates it is a type II supernova. We find a close match with
SN2005cs at +3 days with a SNID estimated red-shift of z=0.016.
The proposed host galaxy is SDSS J111403.11+675128.6 with
z=0.0208 (source NED).
