We report on optical and infrared observations of the black hole
candidate XTE J1817-330 (ATel #714). The observations were
performed in the K band with the REMIR Camera (field of view of 10'x10'
and a pixel size of 1.22") and in the R band with the ROSS Camera (field of
view of 10'x10' and a pixel size of 1.22"). Both instruments are mounted on
REM, a 60-cm robotic telescope located at the La Silla Observatory (Chile).
NIR observations started on Feb 7.378 (UT), for a total of 10 minutes of
exposure. We find a source at the position:
R.A.(2000) = 18:17:43.54
Dec.(2000) = -33:01:06.7
with an accuracy of +/- 0.5 arcseconds. This position is consistent
with the position of the radio counterpart (ATel #721).
The magnitude of the object is K = 15.0 +/- 0.4, calibrated with respect
to the 2MASS catalogue. Further analysis is in progress. We propose this
source as the NIR counterpart of XTE J1817-330.
