MAXI/GSC detection of a new X-ray transient MAXI J1619-383

The MAXI/GSC nova alert system triggered a faint X-ray transient at 07:11:20 on November 14, 2014. We obtained the source position at

(R.A., Dec) = (244.926 deg, -38.375 deg) = (16 19 42, -38 22 30) (J2000)

with a statistical uncertainty of 0.28 deg at the 90% confidence limit and an additional systematic uncertainty of 0.1 deg (90% containment radius).

The 2-20 keV flux has increased since November 13, and one-day averaged 2-20 keV fluxes from November 14 through 16 show no significant variability. The 2-4 keV, 4-10keV and 10-20 keV fluxes over the above period are 0.021+/0.004 photons/cm2/s (corresponding to 12+/-2 mCrab), 0.021+/0.003 photons/cm2/s (18+/-3 mCrab), and 0.014+/0.005 photons/cm2/s (37+/-13 mCrab), respectively. We tentatively name the source MAXI J1619-383. There are two cataloged X-ray sources in the error region, 1RXS J161838.4-381911 and 1RXS J161815.1-382027, but the nature of these sources are not known. The follow-up observations are strongly encouraged to reveal the nature of the source.
