We report spectroscopic observations that show that the possible nova in the M31 field
iPTF14gnj, announced in ATel #6567, is
not a nova. The object was observed on 2014 Oct 16.88 (UT) with the 4.2-m William Herschel
Telescope on La Palma using the ACAM imager/spectrograph with the V400 grism and the
1.5-arcsec slit. The spectrum, obtained with a 400 seconds exposure, shows a continuum source,
with no emission lines.
