The PTF (ATEL #1964; http://www.astro.caltech.edu/ptf/ ) reports the discovery of a new supernova, PTF10hcw. The supernova was discovered on May 14 UT at RA(J2000) = 08:43:36.22 and DEC(J2000) = +50:12:38.5 at a magnitude of 19.27 in R-band (calibrated with respect to the USNO catalog) in the galaxy NGC 2639. The supernova was not detected down to mag 20.3 in previous PTF images taken during April 2010 (3-sigma). A spectrum was obtained using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS; Oke et al. 1995, PASP, 107, 375) on the Keck I 10-m telescope on May 15 UT, revealing the supernova to be of type Ib. The superfit program (Howell et al. 2005, ApJ 634, 1190) finds a good match to the type Ib SN 1999dn at 2-3 weeks post-peak.
