We report the detection of a young supernova, designated as iPTF16auf, at RA=14:31:09.26 and Dec=+27:14:09.8 (J2000), in the vicinity of the star forming galaxy MRK 685 at spectroscopic redshift 0.015. The supernova was found at g=18.03+/-0.06 mag (absolute magnitude -16.0) on May 13.35 (UTC). It was not detected down to g>21 on May 10 or earlier.

Upon discovery, we triggered Gemini-N to obtain an optical spectrum with GMOS starting on May 13.47. The spectrum shows absorption from Si II, S II and Fe II, indicating that iPTF16auf is a young Type Ia supernova. The velocity corresponding to the minimum of Si II 6335 is 19000 km/s.

Other follow-up observations, including Swift, LCOGT and NOT, have been triggered. Additional follow-up at all wavelengths is highly encouraged.
