We report spectroscopic follow-up of two nova candidates in M31.
PNV J00422371+4110142 (ATel 4259) was observed with the Double Beam
Spectrograph (DBSP)
mounted on the 200-inch Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory on UT 2012/07/17.
The spectrum shows a very blue continuum with Halpha emission. The Halpha shows
a P-Cygni profile. Hbeta and Hgamma are strong absorption features.
Follow-up with the Dual Imaging Spectrograph (DIS) mounted on
the ARC-3.5m telescope at Apache Point Observatory was done on UT
2012/07/22. This spectrum
now shows a very blue continuum with Halpha and Hbeta in emission.
This optical transient is a
classical nova in M31.
PNV J00423991+4126573 (ATel 4266), internally designated as PTF12guq,
was observed
with DBSP on UT 2012/07/19. The spectrum shows a blue continuum is superposed
by Balmer, O I 7773 and Fe II lines. All lines show P-Cygni profile.
This spectrum confirms that PTF12guq is an Fe-II class nova in M31.
