Processing of Pan-STARRS medium-deep field #9 (MD09) data has led to the discovery of an optical transient, designated PS10909006, at coordinates RA = 22:15:48.064, DEC = +01:11:05.39 (J2000), and with an apparent brightness of r~21.4 mag. The object was not detected in observations obtained as late as 2009 July 23 UT. A spectrum of the source obtained with the GMOS spectrograph on the Gemini-North 8-m telescope on 2009 Sep 24 UT reveals that the object is a type Ia supernova at z=0.28 about 1-2 months after maximum light. Narrow emission lines from the host galaxy confirm the redshift.
