ASASSN-17bq: Discovery of A Supernova in GALEXASC J072538.14+590010.5

During the ongoing All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN or "Assassin"), using data from the quadruple 14-cm "Brutus" telescope in Haleakala, Hawaii, we discovered a new transient source, most likely a supernova, in the galaxy GALEXASC J072538.14+590010.5.
ASASSN-17bq (AT 2017xx) was discovered in images obtained on UT 2017-01-27.51 at V~17.6 mag. We also detect the object in images obtained on UT 2017-01-27.51 (V~17.5). We do not detect (V>17.2) the object in images taken on UT 2017-01-14.40 and before. An image obtained on 2017-01-29 by R. Koff confirms the discovery of the transient. This figure shows the archival Pan-STARRS g-band image of the host (left) and the R. Koff confirmation image (right). The red circle has a radius of 5" and is centered on the position of the transient in the R. Koff image.
The position of ASASSN-17bq is approximately 1.0" South and 0.5" East from the center of the galaxy GALEXASC J072538.14+590010.5 (no redshift information available from NED). A spectrum taken on 2017-01-29 shows the transient to be a Type Ia SN at a redshift z=0.04 approximately 3 weeks after max. Properties of the new source and photometry are summarized in the tables below:

Follow-up observations are encouraged.
While we are participating in the TNS system to minimize potential confusion, ASAS-SN will continue using ASASSN-17xx transient names as our primary nomenclature (including supernovae, but also other classes of transients), and we encourage others to do the same. We prefer merging the names as ASASSN-17xx (AT 2017xyz) to preserve, rather than anonymize, the origin of the transient.
