A spectrum of AT2016itb was obtained using the 1.82-m Plaskett telescope (National Research Council of Canada) covering the range 374-706 nm(resolution 0.35 nm) on UT Dec. 8.28 that reveals the object to be a type-Ia (normal) supernova near maximum light. Cross-correlation of the spectrum with a template library using SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) has yielded a fit to the type-Ia supernova 1994D at maximum. A faint and un-catalogued probable host galaxy is located 3 seconds of arc to the south-west of the supernova position. Our spectrum fit implies a redshift of the order z = 0.4.
