We obtained an optical spectrum (range 4000-8000 Ang) of Gaia16bic using the robotic Liverpool Telescope + SPRAT, on 2016 Sept. 21.2. The spectrum is blue, with broad lines from Halpha, Hbeta and a probable blend of NaD / HeI (5876 Ang). Halpha has a FWHM of 11,000 km/s in emission, while Hbeta and Na/He have a P-Cygni profile. Overall, the spectrum is consistent with a Type II SN soon after explosion.
The absolute magnitude of Gaia16bic (-16.4, given a redshift of z=0.018 for NGC 2532) is also consistent with a Type II SN a few days after explosion.
