The Nearby Supernova Factory reports the discovery of supernova SNF20061024-009 (coordinates RA 23:26:51.60 DEC +09:19:57.6 J2000.0) in images obtained October 24.2 UTC at an approximate magnitude of 19.4 (calibrated to R) using the QUEST II camera on the Palomar Oschin 48-inch telescope as a part of the JPL Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking component of the Palomar-QUEST Consortium. No supernova was visible at this location on October 9. A spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of this object, obtained October 28.3 UTC, obtained with the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescope reveals that it is a young Type II SN at a redshift of z = 0.032, judging from the location of the peak of its H-alpha P Cygni emission peak. P Cygni H-beta is also detected. A maximum ejection velocity of 8600 km/s is measured from the blue wing of the H-alpha absorption.
