We conducted a spectroscopic observation of transient Gaia16aki at 2016-04-09T02:45:30 UT.This transient was observed by the Gaia Photometric Science survey on 2016-04-06T03:15:51 UT at position RA=15:59:10.60, DEC=14:38:29.40
A spectrum was obtained in the visible, 400-800nm, with resolution R~350, using the SPRAT spectrograph on the Liverpool Telescope located at Roque de los Muchachos.
Classification using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) indicates it is a type Ia supernova. We find a close match with SN2006ax at -6 days with at SNID estimated red-shift of z=0.076. The transient is 0.057 arcmin from the proposed host galaxy, DSS J155910.36+143829.4, redshift z=0.0737 (source NED). The ejecta velocity estimated from the Si II 635.3nm absorption feature is ~10,800 km/s.
