We report optical spectroscopy (range 360-920 nm) of ASASSN-15pp (ATel #8047) obtained at the Las Campanas 2.5-m du Pont telescope (+WFCCD) on September 13.4 UT. The spectrum clearly shows the features of a type Ia supernova around maximum light.
Cross correlation with a library of supernova spectra via the Supernova Identification tool (SNID, Blondin & Tonry, 2007, ApJ 666, 1024) confirms this classification but does not constrain the phase,
yielding very good matches with normal type Ia supernovae between 8 days before (e.g. 2002bo) and 3 days after (e.g. 2000cf) maximum brightness. The expansion velocity derived from the minimum of the 635.5-nm Si II absorption is approximately 10800 km/s, assuming for ESO159-G023 the redshift of 0.02396 available from NED.
