A spectrum was obtained on UT Aug. 7.35 of ASASSN-15nq (ATEL 7880) using the 1.82-m Plaskett telescope (National Research Council of Canada) covering the range 365-720 nm (resolution 0.35 nm). Cross-correlation with a template library using SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) shows ASASSN-15nq to be a normal type-Ia supernova approximately one week pre-maximum light. We find a good fit to the template of SN 2002er at T=-6 days. Adopting the published redshift of 2MFGC 13779 (Sanchez Almeida, J. et al., 2011, ApJ 735, 125) of z=0.03 yields an expansion velocity for the Si II (rest 635.5 nm) feature of 12,000 km/s.
