We report spectroscopic observations of the optical transient PS15ayb (ATel #7723) taken on 2015-07-01T04:07:07 UTC using the SPRAT spectrograph on the Liverpool Telescope at La Palma. The spectrum shows narrow H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma and H-delta absorption lines without significant redshift. We conclude the spectrum is consistent with the transient being a dwarf nova in outburst.
We find no coincident object in the DSS and USNO B2.0 catalogues although the initial ATel #7723 reported a faint source in the Pan-STARRS reference stack. Considering the discovery magnitude of V = 16.78 the outburst amplitude is > 4 magnitudes.
