Supernova Discoveries: Type IIn SNF20060209-002 and Type Ia SNF20060209-003

The Nearby Supernova Factory reports the discovery and classification of two supernovae. Both were discovered in images obtained using the QUEST II camera on the Palomar Oschin 48-inch telescope as a part of the JPL Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking component of the Palomar Consortium. Spectra (range 320-1000 nm) of these objects were obtained using the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS) on the University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescope for classification purposes.

SNF20060209-002 (coordinates RA 12:00:17.12 DEC +28:36:22.0 J2000.0) was discovered in QUEST II images obtained February 9.4 UT at an approximate magnitude of 17.9 (calibrated to R). A SNIFS spectrum obtained February 15.5 UT reveals it to be a Type IIn supernova at an approximate redshift of z = 0.035, measured from the peak of the H-alpha emission. The continuum is extremely blue, and other Balmer lines are visible.

SNF20060209-003 (coordinates RA 13:46:13.71 DEC -09:07:50.6 J2000.0) was discovered in QUEST II images from February 9.6 UT at an approximate magnitude of 18.6 (calibrated to R). A SNIFS spectrum taken February 15.6 indicates that this is a spectroscopically normal Type Ia supernova about one week past maximum light at an approximate redshift of z = 0.05 as measured by comparison to a library of supernova spectra.
