We report a high resolution optical spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of ASASSN-15aj (ATel #6886) obtained on UT January 12.17 with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) at the 6.5 m Magellan II (Clay) telescope. A preliminary reduction of the data shows that this is a type Ia supernova. With the aid of the Supernova Identification tool (SNID, Blondin and Tonry, 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) we find many good matches to normal type Ia supernovae around maximum light (best match is 2003iv at 1 day after maximum brightness). Adopting for the host galaxy, NGC 3449, the recession velocity of 3274 km/s (Thereau et al. 1998, A&AS, 130, 333, via NED) we find that the Si II 635.5 nm line is blueshifted by approximately 10400 km/s.
