Spectroscopic confirmation and additional photometry of the M31 nova candidate PNV J00423972+4120117

We report the spectroscopic confirmation of the M31 nova candidate PNV J00423972+4120117 (#ATel 6563). The object was observed on 2014 Oct 16.88 (UT) with the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma using the ACAM imager/spectrograph with the V400 grism and the 1.5-arcsec slit.
The spectrum, obtained with a 900 seconds exposure, shows emission lines of H&alpha, with FWHM=1300 km/s and FWZI=4200 km/s (EW ~ -50Å), H&beta, with FWHM=1200 km/s and FWZI 3500 km/s (EW ~ -19Å), and very weak H&gamma line. The emission lines show a velocity shift consistent with the nova belonging to M31. Fe II emission lines at 4923, 5018, 5169 are very weakly present, as well as Ca II 3964. Neither Na I D, He I, nor any [O I] or nitrogen lines appear at this time with an equivalent width upper limit of about 2Å. The nova is in the optically thick stage and the spectrum is consistent with a strong absorption in the UV.
We also report additional photometry, from data collected with the Danish 1.54-m telescope at the ESO La Silla Observatory, with the 0.8-m Ritchey-Chretien F/9.6 Joan Oro telescope at the Observatori Astronomic del Montsec, owned by the Catalan Government and operated by the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya, and from the 0.65-m telescope at the Ondrejov Observatory:
