We report that an optical spectrogram (range 335-785 nm; resolution 0.9 nm) of ASASSN-14ay (cfr. ATEL #6150), obtained on May 21.97 UT with the Asiago 1.22-m Galileo Telescope (+ Boller & Chivens spectrograph) under the Asiago Transient Classification Program (Tomasella et al. 2014, arXiv:1403.7233), shows it to be a type Ia supernova around maximum light. Adopting for the host galaxy a radial velocity of 9254 km/s (SDSS DR4; via NED), an expansion velocity of about 13800 km/s is deduced from the position of the minimum of the Si II 635nm line. The Asiago classification spectra are posted at website URL http://sngroup.oapd.inaf.it. Classification was made via GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383) and SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024).
