XTE J1752-223: back to optical quiescence

We observed the black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 (ATel #2258) with the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) and the ACAM imager/spectrograph at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma, Spain.

200-s exposures were taken in the R and I bands under photometric conditions and 0.6-0.7-arcsec seeing on Aug 24.887 and Aug 24.893, respectively. The object has dropped substantially since the optical re-brightening reported in ATel #2805. Due to the good seeing conditions we are able to resolve the target from its nearby star and obtain a magnitude limit I >= 18.7, which is consistent with the i' >= 18.9 limit from Russell et al. (ATel #2775). Some residual flux is also seen at the position of the counterpart in the R-band image but an upper limit could not be derived.
