AGILE detected intense gamma-ray emission above 100 MeV from a new unidentified source at high Galactic latitudes (AGL J1023-3738), with Galactic coordinates (l, b) = (273.1, 16.5) +/- 0.7 (95% stat. confidence level error box radius).

Integrating from 2009-12-25 22:30 UT to 2009-12-27 22:10 UT, a maximum likelihood analysis yields a detection at a significance level larger than 5 sigma, and a flux F = (300+/-100)10-8 ph/cm2/s (E > 100 MeV). The source is still detectable with a significance level above 4 sigma for an integration between 2009-12-26 16:00 UT and 2009-12-28 10:00 UT.

No extragalactic or Galactic catalogued source is known within the error box of AGL J1023-3738.

This measurement was obtained with AGILE observing a large portion of the sky in a spinning mode.

Multifrequency observations of the AGL J1023-3738 error box are strongly encouraged.
