The candidate Anomalous X-ray Pulsar XTE J1810-197 (ATEL #188) has been observed with XMM-Newton on September 8, 2003 from 13:30 to 16 UT and from 17 to 17:30 UT.

The 0.6-10 keV spectrum obtained with the EPIC PN camera is inconsistent with a single power law. The spectrum can be fit by a two components model consisting of a blackbody with temperature kT=0.67 +/- 0.01 keV and a power law with photon index 3.8 +/- 0.2.

The 2-10 keV flux corrected for the absorption (N_H = (1.06+/-0.04) x 10^{22} cm^{-2}) is 3.3 x 10^{-11} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}.

Pulsations at P=5.53934(1) s are detected with a nearly sinusoidal light curve and a pulsed fraction of about 50%. No bursts were detected during this observation.

These results strongly support the classification of this source as an AXP.
