We report spectroscopic observations of AT2022wgv (Discovered by the ATLAS group, also reported by ZTF and MASTER groups) with the 2-metre Himalayan Chandra Telescope. The transient is spatially coincident with a z=0.86 galaxy seen in PanSTARRS, SDSS and Legacy survey images. On 2022-10-04.75 UT (MJD 59856.75064), we used the Gr7 grism of the HFOSC instrument to obtain a spectrum spanning 3500-7800A. We see a strong H-alpha emission line at zero redshift. We also see weak emission features for H-beta and 4686 Angstrom He-II, and several broad Balmer absorption features. Based on the early lightcurve and the spectral features, we conclude that the transient is likely a Milky Way CV, unrelated to the background galaxy. The 2m Himalayan Chandra Telescope is part of the Indian Astronomical Observatory at Ladakh, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (Bengaluru, India). These observations were carried out under the ToO program HCT-2022-C3-P12. We thank the HCT and CREST staff for their support during the observations. We thank the observer for sparing the ToO time.
