An Initial Analysis of the VLA Observation of the Nearby Supernova SN2020oi in M100

We report our initial analysis of the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observation of the nearby (~17 Mpc) supernova SN2020oi in M100. SN2020oi was discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF; ATel #11266), reported by the ALeRCE broker (TNS report 58241, Forster et al.), and classified as a Type Ic SN by Siebert et al. (ATel #13393; see also ATel #13391 for early photometry by Ho et al.). The VLA has initiated a public observation of SN2020oi on 2020 January 10. The observation was conducted at 10 GHz (X-band) in the D configuration. We performed an initial analysis of the data using the 3C286 as a flux calibrator and J1224+2122 as a gain calibrator.

The VLA image of the position of SN2020oi reveals a somewhat resolved source. Comparison to the FIRST catalog indicates two previously detected radio sources within 10” of the SN position at a peak flux level of ~3 mJy. Due to limited resolution in D configuration, the detection of radio emission from the SN cannot be determined with high confidence at this time. However, comparison of the FIRST image with the VLA image of the SN position (and the structure of the resolved emission) hints towards an additional new component north (and west) of the two radio sources previously discovered in FIRST. This may be an indication of radio emission from SN2020oi. A more detailed analysis may help to confirm this.

We encourage further radio observations with the VLA and other facilities.
