The Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) Unbiased Transient Survey (NUTS; ATel #8992) collaboration reports the spectroscopic classification of Gaia16byk (SN 2016iot) in the host galaxy SDSS J163851.22+394851.5. The candidate was discovered by the Gaia Photometric Science survey.

The observation was performed with the 2.56 m Nordic Optical Telescope equipped with ALFOSC on 2017-02-23 UT (range 350-950 nm; resolution 1.6 nm).

Name | IAU Name | Redshift | Discovery (UT) | Discovery mag | Type | Phase | Notes
Gaia16byk | SN 2016iot| 0.031 | 2016-11-26.24 | 16.7 | IIL | about three month old | (1)

(1) Good matches are obtained using SNID with spectra of Type IIL SN 1979C and the Type IIL/n SN 1996L obtained three months after explosion. This classification is consistent with the light curve information provided by the Gaia alert pages. The redshift listed is computed from the position of the narrow Halpha line component.

Classification was performed using the SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) tools. We acknowledge ESA Gaia (http://cosmos.esa.int/gaia), and the DPAC Photometric Science Alerts Team (http://gaia.ac.uk/selected-gaia-science-alerts) (Rixon et al, 2014, ATel #6593).
