We obtained a spectrum of M31 nova candidate TCP J00390015+4028580 (see CBAT TOCP) with the low-resolution (R ~ 350) SPRAT spectrograph (Piascik et al. 2014) on the 2-m Liverpool Telescope (Steele et al. 2004) on 2016 November 1.93 UT. The spectrum is red and shows deep TiO absorption bands, along with narrow Hα and Hβ emission lines. This spectrum confirms that the transient is not a classical nova, but is likely a red long-period variable (as suggested by P. Schmeer; CBAT TOCP).
