A spectrum was obtained of ASASSN-16cs (ATEL #8784) = 2016asf on March 08.32 UT using the 1.82-m Plaskett telescope (National Research Council of Canada) covering the range 380-710 nm (resolution 0.32 nm). Cross-correlation with a template library using SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) shows 2016asf to be a normal type-Ia supernova approximately 10 days pre-maximum light. We find a good fit to the template of SN 2003du at T = -10 days. Our fit yields a redshift of z = 0.021. Using the presumed redshift of z=0.021 we measure an expansion velocity for the Si II (rest 635.5 nm) feature of 14,000 km/s.
