We obtained a spectrum of nova candidate M31N 2016-02b (PNV J00443703+4142264; see CBAT TOCP) with the SPRAT spectrograph on the 2m Liverpool Telescope (Steele et al. 2004) on 2016 February 17.85 UT.
The spectrum clearly shows emission lines from the Balmer series(Hα - Hδ) and Fe II multiplets 42 and 75. We measure the FWHM of the Hα line to be 1300 ± 100 km/s, with Hβ showing a significantly larger FWHM of 2900 ± 200 km/s.
The spectrum confirms that M31N 2016-02b is a classical nova eruption in M31 belonging to the Fe II taxonomic class.
