The Nearby Supernova Factory reports the discovery of two supernovae in images obtained using the QUEST II camera on the Palomar Oschin 48-inch telescope as a part of the JPL Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) component of the Palomar-QUEST Consortium. Spectra (range 510-1000 nm) of these targets, obtained with the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS) on the University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescope were used for classification.
SNF20060719-035 (coordinates RA 21:10:34.49 DEC -21:34:42.7 J2000.0) was discovered in a NEAT image from July 19.34 UT at an approximate magnitude of 19.2 (calibrated to R). A SNIFS spectrum obtained July 23.45 UT reveals that it is a Type II supernova at an approximate redshift of z = 0.035 as measured from the peak of the observed H-alpha feature (in net emission). A weak P Cygni He I 587.6 is also detected.
SN 2006du (IAUC # 8733 ) in IC 1529 (z = 0.022556, HIPASS Final Catalog 2006, via NED) was discovered independently by us in a NEAT image from July 20.48 UT at an approximate magnitude of 17.16 (calibrated to R). A SNIFS spectrum obtained July 23.60 UT reveals that it is also of Type II with both H-alpha and He I 587.6 P Cygni profiles.
