S.D. Van Dyk and L.J. Hadfield report: We have observed SN 2006aw (Monard; CBET 434) with the RC Spectrograph on the CTIO Blanco 4-m telescope on 2006 Mar 24.00 UT under very good conditions. Comparing with the spectrum of SN 1990U on day 12 in Matheson et al. (2001, AJ, 121, 1648), from a preliminary reduction of the SN 2006aw spectrum we determine that it is a Type Ic and estimate its age at about two weeks old. From H-alpha in the host galaxy's spectrum, we determine a redshift z=0.019 (cf. z=0.016 listed by NED).

A preliminary extraction of the SN 2006aw spectrum.
