Detection of radio emission at 610 MHz from the supernova SN2008bx in the BCD galaxy I Zw 97

We report the likely detection of the Type II supernova SN 2008bx (T. Puckett et. al. 2009, CBET #1348; M.C. Bentz et. al. 2009, CBET #1359; S. Blondin & P. Berlind 2009, CBET #1359) at 610 MHz in the blue compact dwarf galaxy I Zw 97. The observations of I Zw 97 were made using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) on 04 June 2009 with an on-source time of ~4.5 hours as part of the programme to study star forming regions in blue compact dwarf galaxies. This resulted in an image with rms noise of 70 microJy.
The peak radio emission in 610 MHz coincides with the optical location of SN 2008bx and is measured to be ~0.74 mJy.
Comparison of pre-supernova observations of the galaxy in optical obtained using HCT (Ramya et al. 2009 MNRAS, 397, 97) and post-supernova (U.K. Gurugubelli et al. in preparation) indicate the supernova is located in the southern star forming region in I Zw 97. This star forming region is not detected in the FIRST and NVSS surveys at 1.4 GHz. Since these surveys precede the supernova in 2008, the radio source we detect at 610 MHz is likely to be new and associated with SN2008bx.
Further confirmatory observations are being requested at GMRT.
