SMARTS consortium observations of Aql X-1 began on 02/26/2003 with the 1.3m telescope at CTIO + ANDICAM instrument. In the subsequent 5 days, the source brightened by ~1.2 mag in R and ~0.8 mag in J. We note that these measurements include light from the near neighbor star V1333 Aql (Chevalier et al., 1999, A&A, 347,L51). We thus confirm X-ray observations (ATEL #124) that the source is now in outburst.
