AGILE detection of enhanced gamma-ray activity from a new unidentified source, AGL J0523+0646

AGILE is detecting intense gamma-ray emission above 100 MeV from an unidentified source, AGL J0523+0646, at Galactic coordinates (l,b)=(196.32, -16.10) +/- 0.6 deg (95% stat. c.l.) +/- 0.1 deg (syst.) (R.A., Dec (J2000): 80.855, 6.777 deg).

Integrating from 2017-04-16 11:50 UT to 2017-04-18 11:50 UT, a preliminary maximum likelihood analysis yields a detection near 6 sigma and a flux F(E>100 MeV)=(4.6 +/- 1.3) x 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1.

No known gamma-ray source appears within the AGILE error circle. At 1.4 deg lies the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ) 5BZQ J0517+0648 (5th BZCAT Catalog, Massaro et al. 2015), with a redshift z=0.84.

This measurement was obtained with AGILE observing a large portion of the sky in spinning mode. Multifrequency observations of AGL J0523+0646 are strongly encouraged.
