We report optical spectroscopic confirmation of the recent M31 nova candidate M31N 2016-09a (= PNV J00425566+4119145), announced in ATel #9545. The spectral data were obtained on 2016 Sep. 25.997 UT using the Russian BTA telescope equipped with the SCORPIO spectrograph. The spectrum was taken with a resolution of 5.3 Å in the 4050 - 5850 Å range.

Photometry of the nova obtained shortly prior to the BTA spectrum with the same device gave V = 18.06 ± 0.09, R = 17.9 ± 0.1.

The nova shows Balmer emission lines, numerous Fe II lines, as well as Mg I (5172, 5183 Å) and Mg II (4481 Å) lines. The strongest Fe II lines (4923, 5018, 5169 Å) are comparable in intensity to the hydrogen lines H-delta, H-gamma, H-beta. The Balmer and Fe II lines show strong P Cyg profiles; the difference between their center of gravity and the blue edge of the P Cyg is 1750 ± 100 km/s. We conclude that this M31 nova belongs to the Fe II class type.
