The Nearby Supernova Factory reports the discovery of supernova SNF20061113-003 (coordinates RA 02:04:24.02 DEC 09:40:38.2 J2000.0) in images obtained November 13.2 UTC at an approximate magnitude of 19.7 (calibrated to R) using the QUEST II camera on the Palomar Oschin 48-inch telescope as a part of the JPL Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking component of the Palomar-QUEST Consortium. No object is visible at this location on a previous image taken November 11.2 UTC. A spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of this object, obtained November 15.5 UTC with the SuperNova Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS) on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope, reveals that it is a young Type II supernova, with He I 587.6 nm and H-alpha P Cygni features. The H-alpha detected in the spectrum of the nearby anonymous host galaxy indicates a redshift of z = 0.0248.
The Nearby Supernova Factory also reports that a SNIFS spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of SN 2006il (IAUC # 8770 ) in UGC 3664 (z = 0.02893, Marzke et al, 1996, AJ, 112, 1803), obtained November 15.6 UTC reveals that it is a Type Ib SN. Prominent P Cygni Ca II infrared triplet, P Cygni O I 777.6 nm and a small He I 587.6 nm absorption are visible.
