At 2016-07-16 19:18 UT , the MAXI/GSC nova alert system triggered on a bright source at a position consistent with that of an RS CVn star GT Mus. The flux increased from 2016-07-16 13:08:30 UT to 2016-07-16 19:18 UT (the trigger time). The flux at 2016-07-16 19:18 UT is 150+-20 mCrab (90% error) in 4-10 keV band, corresponding to a luminosity of 1e34 ergs/s for an assumed distance of 172 pc. No decay is yet detected until 2016-07-17 06:07 UT. The observed flux is the highest among those in flares detected with the MAXI/GSC (e.g. Kanetou et al. 2015, ATEL#8285).
The position was determined from the data at 2016-07-16 20:51:30 UT, as (R.A., Dec) = (174.992 deg, -65.461 deg) = (11 39 58, -65 27 39) (J2000) with a statistical 90% C.L. circle error region with radii of 0.37 deg. There is an additional systematic uncertainty of 0.1 deg (90% containment radius). This position is consistent with that of an GT Mus. No other source is listed in the ROSAT Bright Source Catalog in this error region.
