We report linear polarimetric measurements of the Fe II-type classical nova PNV J17355050-2934240 (M. Yamamoto, CBAT
TOCP site, http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/unconf/followups/J17355050-2934240.html, ATel #8809, #8817) in the VRI bands. The observations were made during 2016 March 13-18 using the photopolarimeter on the 1m Zeiss telescope at the Vainu Bappu Observatory (VBO), Kavalur, India. The RI passbands approximate those of the Kron-Cousins system.
The observed degree of linear polarization and position angle are as listed below.
The probable errors of the measurements are given in the parentheses.
March 13; JD 2457461.48
V: P(%) = 4.50 (0.54), PA (deg) = 179.6 (3.4)
R: P(%) = 4.29 (0.07), PA (deg) = 2.4 (0.5)
I: P(%) = 3.98 (0.05), PA (deg) = 2.9 (0.3)
March 14; JD 2457462.49
R: P(%) = 4.67 (0.08), PA (deg) = 4.4 (0.5)
I: P(%) = 4.06 (0.05), PA (deg) = 0.6 (0.3)
March 15; JD 2457463.4
R: P(%) = 4.76 (0.05), PA (deg) = 4.8 (0.3)
I: P(%) = 4.00 (0.04), PA (deg) = 1.8 (0.3)
March 18; JD 2457466.4
R: P(%) = 5.26 (0.11), PA (deg) = 5.0 (0.6)
I: P(%) = 3.96 (0.05), PA (deg) = 1.4 (0.4)
March 19; JD 2457467.4
R: P(%) = 5.02 (0.13), PA (deg) = 3.0 (0.8)
I: P(%) = 4.37 (0.06), PA (deg) = 3.0 (0.4)
Since the nova is located in a region of high interstellar extinction
(ATel #
8811), a major fraction of the observed polarization is likely to be interstellar.
