In addition to supernovae, the ongoing All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN or
``Assassin'') also discovers many other interesting transients, including numerous CVs. Since January 1st, 2015, we have discovered 99 CV candidates, which translates into a discovery rate of 1.25 CV/day.
Using data from the quadruple 14-cm "Brutus" telescope in Haleakala, Hawaii, and from the double 14-cm "Cassius" telescope in Cerro Tololo, Chile, we recently discovered five particularly bright transient sources, likely CVs:
Object RA (J2000) DEC (J2000) Disc. UT Date Disc. V mag
ASASSN-15fd 05:56:41.11 -75:09:38.00 2015-03-15.12 14.2
ASASSN-15fc 18:08:30.49 47:46:23.10 2015-03-18.62 13.4
ASASSN-15fh 05:52:29.28 12:39:16.90 2015-03-19.25 14.0
ASASSN-15fo 12:39:56.19 -47:16:24.00 2015-03-20.20 14.5
ASASSN-15fp 12:02:51.49 -45:41:15.30 2015-03-20.23 14.4
ASASSN-15fd was present in images obtained on 2015-03-15.12 at V=14.3, on 2015-03-16.15 at V=14.2, and on 2015-03-17.99 at V=13.2. It matches to a red source near the LMC with B=16.5, R=15.3. There is also a GALEX match. If the source is located in the LMC, it is not a CV,
but rather another type of luminous transient, so follow-up is particularly encouraged
in this case.
ASASSN-15fc was present in data on 2015-03-15.64 at V>17.0 and on 2015-03-18.62 at V=13.6. It matches to a B=20.8 object.
ASASSN-15fh was present in images obtained 2015-03-16.27 at V>16.7 and brightened to V=14.0 on 2015-03-19.25. The latest measurement taken on 2015-03-20.23 is of V=14.2. There is a 0.8" match to a j=21 source in The Guide Star Catalog.
ASASSN-15fo matches to B=18.3 source, V>17.2 on 2015-03-14.14, V=15.4 on 2015-03-19.41, V=14.5 on 2015-03-20.20.
ASASSN-15fp matches to B=19.5 source, possible precursor outburst with V=16.7 on 2015-03-15.17, V>17.5 on 2015-03-18.39, V=14.4 on 2015-03-20.23.
