The Nearby Supernova Factory reports that a spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of supernova 2006D (IAUC # 8658 ) in MCG -01-33-34, obtained January 14.6 UT with the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescope reveals that it is a Type Ia supernova about one week prior to maximum. Most striking is the clear signature of C II 657.8 nm. Concomitant features from C II 426.7, 472.0 and 723.3 nm are also present. Once the spectrum is corrected for the host redshift (z = 0.008526, Davoust & Contini 2004, A&A, 416, 515 via NED), we measure Doppler shifts of the absorption minima of these lines to be around 12,000 km/s. We strongly encourage continued observations, including spectropolarimetry, of this bright event to follow the evolution of the carbon signature.
