The Nearby Supernova Factory reports that a spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey supernova SN5944 (SDSS SN Webpage, CBET #254), obtained October 18.5 UT with the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescope, reveals that it is a Type Ia supernova on the rise, spectroscopically similar to SN 1994D 5 days before maximum light. In addition to a weak Ca II IR triplet absorption around 10,000 km/s a stronger high-velocity (20,000-25,000 km/s) component is visible, reminiscent of the Type Ia SN 2001el (Wang et al. 2003 ApJ 591, 1110).
