We report that an optical spectrogram (range 340-800 nm; resolution 1.1 nm), obtained on May 30.19 UT with the TNG (+ DOLORES spectrograph) under the Asiago Transient Classification Program (Tomasella et al. 2014, as posted at website URL http://arxiv.org/abs/1403.7233 ), shows that ASASSN-14az (ATel #6151) is a type IIb supernova.

Assuming a recessional velocity of 2018 km/s for the host galaxy (Mahdavi & Geller 2004, ApJ 607, 202; via NED), a good match is found with type-IIb supernova 2008ax (Taubenberger et al. 2011, MNRAS 413, 2140) about 10 days after explosion. The spectrum is dominated by deep H-alpha and He-I 587.6 nm absorptions from which we derived expansion velocities of about 14000 km/s and about 11300 km/s, respectively.

The Asiago classification spectra are posted at website URL http://sngroup.oapd.inaf.it. Classification was made via GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383) and SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024).
