We report optical spectroscopy and photometry of the recent M31 nova candidate M31N 2014-01a (= PNV J00431362+4114469) detected by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search on 2014 Jan. 02.13 UT ( http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/unconf/followups/J00431362+4114469.html ) and also observed on 2014 Jan. 05.42 UT as a 16.4 mag object by T. Yusa and K. Kato (Japan). Using the Russian BTA telescope equipped with the SCORPIO spectrograph we have obtained spectra and photometry of the nova M31N 2014-01a on 2014 Jan. 3.756 UT (photometry), 2014 Jan. 3.767 UT (blue spectrum) and 2014 Jan. 3.802 UT (red spectrum). The blue spectrum has a resolution of 5.3 Å and spectral range 4050 - 5850 Å, the red spectrum has a resolution of 5.6 Å and spectral range 5750 - 7500 Å. We find the nova to be very bright, the photometry of M31N 2014-01a gave B = 16.89 ± 0.09, V = 16.28 ± 0.05, Rc = 16.14 ± 0.04 and I = 16.00 ± 0.10. The nova appeared to be near maximum light during our observations, and then the next night (ATel #5744) the nova faded 0.2 mag in V. We classify the nova as a member of the Fe II class. Its spectrum is pure absorption with blue-shifted absorption lines of hydrogen, numerous Fe II lines, Si II (6347, 6371 Å), Mg II 4481 Å, Na I (D). The blue-shifted absorption line widths (corrected for spectral resolution) in km/s and equivalent widths in Å of Hα, Hβ, Hγ and Fe II (4923 Å) lines are 990/12.8, 990/9.0, 1100/7.5 and 780/4.9, respectively. Absolute velocities of blue-shifted lines measured as the center of gravity are -1400, -1100, -1200 and -1100 km/s for Hα, Hβ, Fe II (4923 Å) and Si II (6347, 6371 Å) lines, respectively. The M31 velocity is -300 km/s. The spectrum is attached, note fringes in the red side of Hα.
