A subsequent optical spectrum of SN 2009ip obtained with SALT/RSS on Oct. 12, 2012 does not confirm the presence of the strong P Cygni Balmer features reported by Vinko et al. in ATel #4479.
Checking the reduction of previous observations, it is found that the strong P Cygni-like features in the Oct. 11 spectrum are artifacts due to an erroneous flux calibration. After correcting this mistake, the Oct. 11 spectrum appears similar to the new one, dominated by the Type IIn SN emission features from H and He. Thus, the SN ejecta is probably still buried within the previously ejected envelope, and its reappearance (reported prematurely in ATel #4479) has not been started yet.
