The PTF (ATEL #1964; http://www.astro.caltech.edu/ptf/ ) reports the discovery of a new supernova, PTF10ksq. The supernova was discovered on June 14 UT at RA(J2000) = 23:45:50.60 and DEC(J2000) = -06:46:53.1 at a magnitude of 19.6 in R-band (calibrated with respect to the USNO catalog) in the galaxy MCG -01-60-028 (z=0.035). The supernova was not detected down to mag 21.5 in previous PTF images taken during 2009 (3-sigma). A spectrum was obtained using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS; Oke et al. 1995, PASP, 107, 375) on the Keck-1 10-m telescope on June 17 UT, revealing the supernova to be of type II. The superfit program (Howell et al. 2005, ApJ 634, 1190) finds a good match to the type II-P SN 1999em at 15 days post-peak.
